Try before you buy?

With the explosion in online shopping in the last few years, it isn’t crazy to think that more people are buying everything and anything online rather than in shops, including clothing.

We all know great bargains are just waiting to be found on the internet, and clothes are no exception. If you know where to look then great savings can be made. But is this really a replacement for the real thing?

It may as well be a scientific fact that, for women, clothes shopping is not just about the clothes. It’s about a day out with the girls and a chance to look at, and wear, things with the knowledge that no sale will ever take place. And that’s the advantage that real-life shopping has: you can try before you buy.

If you know your size, then you might think you’re alright buying online. But shops often have their own idea about what each size means, so that skimpy dress you bought online yesterday may turn out to be nothing more than great-looking pregnancy clothing.

Fashion online or shop?

Nothing quite beats a day at the shops doing some serious retail therapy trying on all the latest fashions. You can see whether they really suit you and make sure you choose the correct size. You will also be able to see the colour properly and feel the quality of the fabric. If you are buying a whole outfit you will be able to match items together such as a dress with a jacket.

However if you have a very clear idea about exactly what you want to buy, the Internet is an excellent tool. You can buy in the comfort of your own home without having to worry about stripping off in store changing rooms and having to join a huge queue at the tills. You can often get good bargains online too. Even if you live in a very remote place you have clothes from all over the world available for you to buy with the click of a button.
Always ensure that you are buying from a secure site as you will be giving out your personal details. Check too that the postage costs are reasonable.

Lastly, make sure that if you buy online the store has a return policy in case the item does not fit you.

Beating the rush: buy online

Online clothes shopping opens up a whole new wardrobe experience, it allows perusal of thousands of clothes and different brands without having to leave the comfort of your own home and all you have to do is wait for the knock on your door when your goodies arrive.

The benefits are that you can shop from a variety of stores that you may not have access to locally although I would suggest it is important to check the delivery charge and the returns policy prior to purchasing to make sure you will not be out of pocket if you are not completely satisfied with your items.

In terms of hitting the sales you can save yourself the job of queuing for hours and fighting over that top by simply clicking a button. Sounds like heaven to me!
Sizing can be an issue but if you have shopped in store before you can be confident that you are ordering the correct size and with some stores offering free returns why not order several sizes to be sure of a perfect fit!

Bags of value?

Some people have the money to flaunt designer goods to the waiting paparazzi, get their photo in the magazines, for the judging eyes of the general public, and sometimes suffer the most scathing put-downs for the slightest error of judgement in choice of a simple thing like a handbag. Pity. But it’s their life, and we comfort ourselves that they chose it, and are rich enough to ignore the insults.

But if your choice of handbag is of interest to nobody but yourself, and your immediate friends, don’t allow yourself to feel like you have to follow the advice of the gossip columns and go for this season’s latest trend. Get what you like. So if a designer handbag will bring you eternal joy, brilliant, save up those pennies, and get one. But don’t expect to able to afford anything to put in it afterwards.

But personally, I can entertain the dream of an expensive item, without actually having to own it, and settle for the next level down, be it a copy, the cheaper equivalent to match the style, or the quite mundane, practical, unfashionable, ethical, whatever. I’d buy almost anything, if I knew I wasn’t simply maintaining the elaborate lifestyle of a designer. My money is more important to me than that.

But that’s just me. If you have to go designer to get a quality product for your money, then do it. Absolutely. Don’t be duped into thinking that cheap always means good value. It’s rarely true. But if you are paying a fortune, have the assertion to check you’re getting something worth having, rather than feeling you’ve bought into a fad. You want to be able to show off your handbag in the best society and feel amazing, for more than a week. And then rediscover it in a wardrobe in a decade or so, and find that you have a vintage classic on your hands. Or sell it, get back some of what you paid, and move on to your next conquest.

Watch out for scammers though. Pirate goods are big business these days. Unless you really know your market, it’s easy to be caught out, so be careful. Always get what you paid for. It’s your right as a person. And really annoying if you don’t. It is, however, a good topic for a rant down the pub!

What wouldn’t a mother spend on her children?

After walking around a few fashion shops you soon get a feel for what makes a parent buy what they do. It is all down to cuteness as parents want their kids to look adorable in their new clothes. If they see an outfit that makes their child look this way they’ll really ‘break the bank’ to buy it. They may feel remorse for their spending but they’ll do it time and again.

Of course not everyone thinks this way, can afford to or even has the credit facilities to be able to cover such spending on clothes for their child. The more prudent shopper will be happy if they can find clothes that are well made and fit alright.

They also realise that children grow quickly and what they buy now probably won’t fit them in 6-12 months time - possibly less. Is there really any point in buying expensive clothes when this is the case? One of the main reasons people buy designer clothes is because they last but if they don’t fit this is irrelevant so they’d be better off with a generic brand.
